The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

‘The Guernsey film’

Discover the island behind the film ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society,’ released April 2018. Starring Lily James, Jessica Brown Findlay, Matthew Goode and Penelope Wilton (all from ‘Downton Abbey’), Michiel Huisman (‘Game of Thrones’) and Tom Courtney (Dad’s Army) and directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), the film explores war-time Guernsey and a moving journey of self-discovery for the lead character.

The film stems from a book written by a visitor to the island who became intrigued by Guernsey’s profound occupation history. After travelling to Guernsey in 1980, US author Mary Ann Schaffer became stranded due to thick fog. Stuck in the airport lounge, she spent her visit reading about the occupation of the island and became fascinated. The Channel Islands were the only British territories to experience occupation by Nazi soldiers during World War II. It would be 20 years before Mary Ann began her book but due to deteriorating health, handed over the final manuscript to her niece, Annie Barrows, a well-known author herself, who finished editing and writing it. The book became a best seller and ultimately, a film.

Become as captivated by Guernsey as Mary Ann was. Follow in the footsteps of the characters as you experience the beauty of the island and learn about its heritage. Your visit will include a special tour themed around the film. Should you wish to learn more, each spring islanders host a Heritage Festival culminating in Liberation Day celebrations on 9th May. During this time specialist walks take place and many of the bunkers and fortifications around the island are opened up for the public to visit.
