Cycling in Guernsey on your holidays

Cycling the twenty-four and a half square miles Guernsey offers for your holidays is a good way to explore its sandy northern shores, rugged southern coastlines and miles of country lanes. Cycle routes of various levels and abilities take you through valleys, pine forests, nature reserves and on towards the wide sandy beaches. Taking a tour on two wheels will really help you see Guernsey’s wonderful anglo-french heritage where historical fortifications, ancient dolmans, fishing harbours, coves and tales of witchcraft and smuggling will come alive. Wind your way through wildflower filled country lanes and an array of sub-tropical plants to see the islands attractions or head off to the north western side of the island for a spot of beach hopping.

Although cycling is not permitted on some of the cliff paths and nature trails, particularly between La Vallette Bathing Pools and Pleinmont Point, Guernsey really does encourage cycling and there are miles of ‘ruettes tranquille’, or lanes where cars are limited in speed. A number of cycle sheds and stands are available around the island and a dedicated cycle lane runs from the Eastern Sea Front to the Weighbridge in St Peter Port. Some of the routes around the northern part of the island are much flatter and will take in many of the popular northern beaches rather than attempting the rocky south. A word of warning – there is a steep climb up from the beautiful little cobbled streets of St Peter Port!

Sark by bike

For many visitors, cycling is the preferred way to see Sark. To make the most of your visit it is wise to pre-book bikes or take your own as cycling is a popular pastime on this little island where time has stood still. Situated 9 miles east of Guernsey and at just 2.10 square miles it is easily accessible for a day trip. Car free and with only tractors or carriages to contend with, cycling around the whole island can be achieved in around an hour. Weave in and out of the coast and inland to discover old silver mines at Port Gorey, La Seigneurie Gardens and nature at its very best. You’ll never be far from The Avenue, or main village, for a spot of lunch. However, it’s also a treat to pack a picnic and spend the day biking around the island taking in the breathtaking cliff top views. Park up and walk down some of the steps for a spot of swimming in one of the sandy coves or venture over ‘La Coupée’ – a narrow path of dizzying heights leading to Little Sark in the south. It’s worth noting that cycling is not allowed on La Coupée! Harbour Hill is another area to get off and push and always make sure to give way to horses but, in general, cycling around the peaceful lanes will bring nothing but beautiful wildflowers and a feeling of truly getting away from it all.
