Christmas shopping in St Peter Port

St Peter Port’s quaint cobbled streets sparkling with Christmas lights mean it’s almost Christmas time in Guernsey and VAT free prices and low duty mean it’s a great place to stock up on Christmas gifts.

St Peter Port is reputedly one of the prettiest harbour towns in Europe. The winding cobbled streets slope upwards from the harbour where, at Christmas time a large modern tree lights up the water and surrounding area. Strings of twinkling lights hang high above the narrow streets where high street favourites, boutique shops and Creasy’s department store display festive windows inviting you in to purchase Christmas gifts. Towards Mansell and Mill Street in the Old Quarter, shops full of antiques and crafts can be found whilst Market Square in the pedestrianised part of town, is a great place for fresh produce, especially on Fridays when Fresh Fridays Produce Market takes place.

Festive Markets in St Peter Port

Christmas begins in St Peter Port with the arrival of Father Christmas by lifeboat who then parades through the town centre to switch on the Christmas lights accompanied by carol singing. Heralding the opening of the Christmas Craft Market which runs each Saturday in the lead up to Christmas, this is where you’ll find many unique homemade gifts including cushions appliquéd with the Guernsey lily motif, hand painted plates, soaps, jewellery, Christmas hampers and decorations.

Festive events in St Sampson

Father Christmas also makes an appearance on The Bridge in St Sampson in order to switch on the Christmas lights.
