RHS Britain in Bloom Gold Award

It may only be 25 square miles but Guernsey’s floral delights are renown around the world. The natural beauty and climate of the island from the westerly orchid fields to the wildflower strewn cliffs and southern bluebell woods are complimented by beautiful floral displays of which St Peter Port is an RHS Britain in Bloom Gold winner.

Clematis and Lilies

Guernsey produces the largest number of Clematis in the world and is also known for its Nerines, or Guernsey Lilies. Originally thought to have been washed up on the shore from a shipwrecked vessel, the Samiensis variety took to Guernsey soil and has been growing on the island for many years.

Floral Guernsey

Recognising the importance of the horticultural industry on the island, Floral Guernsey was formed around 20 years ago and now organise three annual floral events during the Spring, Summer and Autumn of each year to coincide with abundant natural displays on the island.

During the festivals nurseries open their doors for workshops and gardening advice, there are specialist guided walks and private gardens will be open for viewing. Heritage seeds and bulbs can be purchased and gardening experts will often be present with many famous faces in attendance in past years.

As well as the Floral Guernsey Festivals, the annual Guernsey Battle of Flowers festival also takes place each summer at Saumarez Park and there is a dedicated Nerine Festival each Autumn at Candie Gardens.

Herm

Herm is also renown for its beautiful gardens which exist in the harsh sea elements. Take a boat from St Peter Port over to the island and enjoy a Herm Island Garden Tour with the gardeners who will explain how they manage to get sub tropical plants to survive there.

Sark

Specialist borders and unusual species form the backdrop of the high walled gardens at La Seigneurie Manor House in Sark. Take a look at the formal and productive gardens and enjoy the sensory area. During Wildflower Fortnight you can take part in guided walks exploring the natural flora on Sark.

Alderney

Bloomin’ Alderney is a chance to explore some of the private gardens on the island and talk to the local people about what they grow.
