Jersey in the Channel Islands

Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands and like Guernsey you don't need a passport to go there on holiday. You can get there by air in less than an hour and you can relax even more because cars drive on the left! Get set for a great mix of beach life and countryside, heritage, culture and 2000 years of history in Jersey. Besides miles of bleached white beaches, cool green lanes and inspiring food, you'll struggle to choose between land and sea sports, guided walks and golf, ancient castles and museums, country pubs and bistros.

There's a year-round programme of festivals which makes Jersey the number one choice for short breaks or longer stay holidays. Enjoy everything from spectacular maritime extravaganzas to floral festivals that include environmental walks and the chance to visit some of the island's most stunning private gardens. Don't miss the world-famous Battle of Flowers, one of Europe's most spectacular carnivals which takes place each August.

The clear blue sea which surrounds this captivating island is the cleanest in Europe and Jersey also enjoys a sunshine record that is the best in the British Isles so there's no shortage of days in which to enjoy them.

Food lovers are spoilt for choice as the island has legions of excellent restaurants to suit any budget, offering superb cuisine, from fresh seafood to the finest beachside burger or bacon sarnie you have ever tasted.

Try your hand at scuba diving, jet-skiing, wakeboarding, wind surfing, water-skiing, kite surfing or fishing. Or, back on terra firma, the island is also heaven for walkers and cyclists. There are a series of free themed walks arranged by the tourist board that explore virtually every inch of the island. If you're a cyclist then you'll enjoy the network of award winning 'Green Lanes' - 50 miles of country lanes and coastal paths that weave across the island where cyclists have priority.

Besides the beaches and activities, there are also plenty of attractions for a fun day out for couples and families. You can visit the world famous Zoo, where some of the world's most endangered species including orang-utans, gorillas, lemurs and snakes, enjoy life in magnificent surroundings. Remember that history is never far at bay in Jersey and some haunting memories of life under German occupation are to be found at the War Tunnels. Also a visit to Elizabeth Castle is another must - cast adrift in St Aubin's Bay and only reachable at high tide by amphibious craft.
