Guernsey Movie

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Heartwarming, tender, compassionate and funny, ‘The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society’ is worth a trip to the cinema for. The unusual name refers to a small group of Guernsey residents who unexpectedly form a literary society in an attempt to escape the confines of life under occupation. The film sensitively explores their fears and hopes in the aftermath of World War II, along with the life of writer Juliet Ashton, who visits the island after forming a bond with one of the members via correspondence over a book.

Picking up the pieces of her life in the wake of the war in London, Juliet has done well for herself and has become a well known author. In the post-war glitz of publicity, she finds herself lost at a time she should be most happy. Little does she realise an unexpected letter may change the course of her life forever.

Living on a small island means everyone knows everyone and a tight knit, largely safe community. Living on a small island when it’s under Nazi rule however, changes things for good. As the children are evacuated and slave labour is moved in to build German towers, tension is rife.
