The Channel Islands Heritage Festival

Find out more about Guernsey’s fascinating history

It promised to be one of the big events for 2015 and didn’t disappoint! This Spring saw the first Channel Islands Heritage Festival take place. Timed to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Liberation from Occupation, the 5 week festival also celebrated the vast history of the island with re-enactments and special heritage attraction events.

The festival may be over for 2015 but Liberation Day takes place annually on 9th May in Guernsey and heritage attractions still have their doors open for visitors. Book a Flight & Hotel deal or choose a Fly Drive Superdeal and discover Guernsey for yourself. All holiday packages include B&B with a wide choice of accommodation available.

Small Islands, big history!

The Channel Islands may be small but they have a big history! Neolithic burial mounds, ancient chambers and cave inscriptions have been found, dating human inhabitants back to prehistoric times. Roman coin hoards, medieval castles and many military defences dating back to Napoleon’s time as well as ones from World War I and II show how desirable the islands were and make for a fascinating visit.

Guernsey Heritage Festival

In celebration of its history, Guernsey has held exciting heritage festivals each year with 2015 seeing a special 5 week long inter island festival arranged by Visit Guernsey in conjunction with Jersey Tourism in celebration of the 70th anniversary of Liberation. A heritage festival does take place each year in Guernsey so if you missed out on the 2015 festival you can still enjoy the heritage attractions this year and book for the next festival.

An exciting programme of events

During the festival, a series of events were held in Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm with heritage attractions throwing open their doors to re-enactments and historical fun. This gave people a chance to find out what life was like in wartime Guernsey at Guernsey’s Castle Cornet or island hop over to Jersey and visit The Jersey War Tunnels.
