Guernsey’s Wonderful West Coast

The west coast of Guernsey is where the islanders come to play. The largest beaches are here and it is fantastic for families.

The southernmost beach of Portlet lies at the foot of the south coast cliffs and has a small working harbour adjoining it. It is a perfect safe haven for small boats from Atlantic storms that occasionally batter the island. Further around the coast lies Lihou Island, a rocky inlet that is separated from Guernsey at high tide and harbours the ancient ruins of a priory built in the 12th century. Lihou Island houses an abundance of marine and bird life and forms part of Guernsey’s Ramsar conservation area.

Two large beaches on the west coast are Vazon Bay and Cobo Bay. Vazon is popular with extreme sports enthusiasts and harbours a special secret: Winter storms sometimes strip away areas of sand to reveal the remains of a forest destroyed by a tidal wave in AD709. Cobo Bay is a huge hit with families, with safe sand and sea you are sure to see many a child playing football or Frisbee until the sun goes down.
