Guernsey running trails and events

Outdoor sports have a special place on the island of Guernsey. Not only do the islands footpaths and lanes offer miles of terrain to explore in various levels of challenge but the coves, bays and beaches provide for an enviable list of water sports. Combined with spectacular views and scenery, it’s no wonder Guernsey running trails and events are a popular pastime for both islanders and those enjoying a visit.

Running trails and events in Guernsey and the other islands

A variety of running challenges take place in Guernsey and around the islands of Jersey, Alderney, Sark and Herm throughout the year. Triathlons, marathons, trail events and challenges of every sort make the most of the milder climate and terrain. Whether you are a serious competitor or just enjoy a run for fitness, there’s bound to be something to suit.

  • Guernsey Ultra – A 36 mile run beginning in Guernsey’s capital town of St Peter Port. Catch the stunning views around Guernsey’s steep and rugged coastal paths before heading towards more flatter terrain and the finish point.
  • Double Islands Ultra – Add in Jersey’s 48 miles to the Guernsey Ultra for even more of a challenge.
  • Round the Rock Ultra – Based in Jersey, this event is open to solo competitors or teams. 48 miles.
  • 5 Islands Ultra – All 5 islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark and Herm in 3 days of running covering 100 miles. This is a popular event so book up early to avoid disappointment. Travel, accommodation and food provided along with a masseur!
  • Titanium Man Triathlon – Combine a little swimming with some running and cycling and you have a triathlon. Open to teams as well as individual competitors with prizes and goody bags at the end.

Tailored for you

Hare and Tortoise Events has been set up by Digby Ellis-Brecknell to provide a range of fun filled (and serious) opportunities for runners. Based in Jersey, Digby co-ordinates a number of events on each island as well as inter-island events. Aiming to be as inclusive as possible, many events are open to solo competitors as well as relay teams. Digby is also available for personal training and advice and can be contacted at [email protected] or Tel: 07797768480.

So why Hare and Tortoise?

Remember the Aesop’s Fable where the over confident speedy Hare thinks he can easily beat the plodding Tortoise in a race? When Hare becomes too complacent and falls asleep in the sun, Tortoise slowly makes his way to the winning line, leaving readers with the moral conclusion that “slow and steady wins the race.” However in Digby’s adapted story, he has decided to add a few more chapters. The two animals keep competing and at different times draw on their natural abilities to gain a win only to discover another way may just be to work together. Illustrating aspects of people’s differing needs when it comes to running and sports, read more about the Hare and Tortoise concept at ‘The Hare and Tortoise Story.’

Joining in with running events

As well as being busy with Hare and Tortoise Events, Digby helps with Run Jersey who provide other running opportunities including 5km and 10km runs throughout the summer, ideal if you are on holiday.
